The Neighborhood Of Greektown
|
|---|
Though it comprises only a few blocks just west of the Loop, Greektown is a fantastic representation of the smells, sounds, and tastes of the Mediterranean. You’ll find authentic Greek shops, bars, and restaurants on Halsted Street between Madison and Van Buren.
Chicago's Greektown came about in the 1960’s and was the first to introduce the “saganaki” (Greek flaming cheese) to the United States, and ever since the neighborhood has flourished by offering its Old World traditions and Greek cuture with the rest of the city.
Greektown's ethnic festivals, (like the Taste of Greece, held for three days in August, and the Greek Independence Day Parade in late March) and its street renovation in 1996 have made this area a truly pleasurable sampling of Greek culture. |
