The Neighborhood Of Hyde Park
|
|---|
Hyde Park is truly a neighborhood built on diversity. This area’s residents are proud of the fact their neighborhood is like no other in the city. It has evolved into a place where the classically educated and the streetwise mingle together. You can find real Southern cooking right down the street from graduate classes at one of the finest institutions of higher learning in the world, the University of Chicago. The original Monsters of the Midway played here, Rockefeller memorials and Frank Lloyd Wright architecture sit shoulder to shoulder with neglected old mansions.
Rockefeller memorials and urban neglect, Frank Lloyd Wright masterpieces and abandoned row houses—these are examples of Hyde Park's mixed character. Hyde Park is where history has been made: The first sustained nuclear chain reaction occurred right in the bowels of the University of Chicago. Meanwhile, the original Monsters of the Midway (the University of Chicago football team) passed the pigskin on the fields of 59th Street. But despite supplying the first Heisman Trophy winner, Hyde Park is now virtually a sport-free neighborhood. The area north of 51st Street have been home to people such as Muhammad Ali and Louis Farrakhan.
Nearly every campus building is decorated with gargoyles; the founders wanted it to be modeled after Oxford University, the centuries-old English college. But the university isn't the only influence here. Located right off of 53rd street, Harper's Court offers an array of shops, restaurants and cultural options. Men and women, young and old, come to test their analytical skills in a game of chess in Harper's Squre (in the middle of Harper's Court). Its easy to find a running match (and onlookers) on any given day.
